When your needs and some wants are met you will start to eliminate scarcity which is a significant cause of fear. As you eliminate scarcity from your life you will start to build a reserve which moves you into a place of abundance. As your abundance fills your proverbial cup, your cup will run over in the form of generosity towards others.
“Too many have dispensed with generosity in order to practice charity.” Albert Camus, French existentialist author & philosopher (1913 - 1960)
True generosity comes from an unplanned and unexpected place. It is naturally meeting the needs of those we encounter, when we encounter them.
I am not against charity; charity typically comes from a planned place. We donate a percentage to our church, an organization we believe in, our childrens school and activities. We strategically plan a financial contribution to better our world and the lives within it. We may then have our company match our contribution and use our charity for a tax benefit. This is great! It is planned greatness that is much needed and significantly impacts our world.
I think what Albert Camus calls generosity is what we do not plan. This is where generosity and self care intersect. Generosity in this sense is the unexpected outflow of a full heart. It is only accomplished when our proverbial cup is full; we have taken such great care of ourselves that we have abundance ready to flow out of us. When we are safe and secure we eliminate scarcity, which allows our generosity to flow in unexpected and unplanned ways. We give because anothers unexpected need is presented to us and we want to meet it. We give more than charity. We give of ourselves. We connect with the receiver and expect nothing in return. We do not need anything in return it was from a place of our abundance anyway. We are merely finding a home for the blessings God put in our care.
