Sometimes a possibility, a dream, a goal, comes up within us that scares us and we want to run and hide. We feel a pull and unseen forces begging us to ask for what we want and believe that we can have it. And yet, within us is that child-like whisper, “but what if I believe for it and still don’t get it? What if I embarrass myself? What if…” Questions in our head bombard us and we begin to rationalize away our dreams with thoughts of “now is not the time” or “I can’t do that” or “I’m too old” or “when the children are out of the house” or…
The next time you have a big dream that scares you, try these 7 ways to step toward your heart’s desires:
1. Recognize and acknowledge your fear. Be willing to feel your fear. Don’t push it down, be willing to sit with your fear. Sometimes the rationalizations come up so fast we don’t realize they have squashed our dream. Take time to simply notice what your heart wants to do, or have, or be, that may be new or out of your comfort zone.
2. Breathe into your dream. Take a few moments to just sit with the dream and breathe while you conceive the possibility of the dream coming true. Visualize yourself living your dream and breathe. Many times when we are scared we hold our breath. Now breathe. Breath life into your dream and make it as vibrant and alive as possible.
3. Pray for your dream. Ask God, your Higher Power, the Universe, whatever you term you use, for assistance in making your dream a reality. No dream happens on its own. We all need assistance. By praying, you are allowing for additional resources to cosmically come to your aid to open doors, bring the right people in your path and to manifest your heart’s desires.
4. Add “This or something better for the highest good of all concerned.” I learned this at the University of Santa Monica in the Masters of Spiritual Psychology program. Add this to the end of all of your prayers. This allows the Universe to meet and exceed your belief about what is possible and to give you what is for your highest good.
5. Write it down. Now that you have prayed, write your dream on a 3×5 card or a sheet of paper or print it from your computer. You can even use a symbol or image that represents that dream. Keep that dream in front of you. Place the card or image on your bathroom mirror, in your journal, your calendar or even on your dashboard. Writing your dream down makes it more real and tells the Universe this is important to you.
6. Take time daily to focus on your dream. Take a few moments in the morning as you awaken and a few minutes before you drift off to sleep to visualize what it would look like and feel like if that dream comes true. It is said that “what you think about, you bring about” so consistently focusing on your dreams will bring you what you desire.
7. Keep believing it is possible. Your mind and even your circumstances may tell you that your dream may not be coming true. You may feel it is taking too long and nothing is happening. No matter what, keep believing and know that God or the Universe has heard you and is responding…and may be responding with the something better…if we only believe.
